BREAST MOUSE - EVER HEARD OF IT?

Today we will talk about one of the most common abnormality which you will find while examining your breasts and which is very commonly seen in females at a larger scale especially in the younger generation.

FIBROADENOMA - Also Known As Breast Mouse.

While self examining  breasts , some of the females might find a small tumor or a lump in their breast which might keep slipping away from the fingers and Fibroadenoma might be one of the diagnosis that should come to your mind while doing so.

Fibroadenoma is a benign tumor that means it is non-cancerous tumor, so yes you don't need to get all worked up and worried if you find such a tumor while examining your breast. It is just a single tumor and rarely grows more than 5cm. It is painless and non tender , but it can become tender during the time of menses.

Why is it called a Breast Mouse? - This tumor is not fixed , which means it will keep on moving and changing position in your breast and while you try to catch it between your fingers to examine , it will  slip away easily.

It is mostly seen in young women as well as elderly . After menopause if fibroadenoma is detected then it should be checked thoroughly because after menopause it has chances of turning malignant that is cancerous.

WHY IS IT CAUSED?

The exact cause is not known yet , but it is thought that fibroadenoma occurs due to increased sensitivity to estrogen hormone.

Our breasts have lobules (milk producing glands ) and ducts ( tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and fibroadenoma occurs from the lobule part of the breast.

TREATMENT

There is no treatment required for fibroadenoma . Usually fibroadenoma regresses itself after a period of time or might get smaller in size.

If the lump gets bigger in size and you notice in changes then it is best to consult your physician.

Surgery is also an option if the chances of the fibroadenoma turning malignant increases specially in elderly women.
