Urinary Tract Infections

Many females or even males suffer from urinary complaints at least once in their lifetime or even multiple times. Urinary complaints can be anything starting from urinary tract infections , to prostate problems in males (benign prostate enlargement )to kidney stones which cause painful urination or frequent urination.
Today I will be talking in detail regarding Urinary Tract infection in Females , as the rate of UTI (urinary tract infection) is higher in females as considered to males. So lets find out the reason to why are females more prone to UTI than males?
Females tend to have a shorter urethra (a tube through which urine passes out) than males , and due to this the bacteria which can cause infection don't have to travel too far and start multiplying ,therefore females tend to suffer more than males. Our urinary system has been designed to keep away such bacteria's , but sometimes due to various reasons this mechanism fails leading to infection. So, lets find out what can be the reasons which can cause UTI!
1) First reason as I have stated above is the shorter urethra ,due to which the bacteria's don't have to travel far to cause infection.
2)The second reason is the most important , that is sexually active women are more prone to UTI's , as the infection can be transmitted from their partners .
3)If you are already suffering from an infection in the anal region , then that infection can travel towards the urethra and cause UTI.
4) UTI's are very common in females who are at their menopausal age. Menopause is when the menses tend the cease/stop completely and this is seen in females by the age of 45 -50.
5)Chances of urinary tract infection also might increase if you are suffering from kidney stones , because the urine can get stagnated at one place and cannot pass easily due to the stone. Therefore it is said that the more amount of time you avoid going to the washroom and control the urge to urinate , the more is the chance of infection.
Now lets find out what are the symptoms which can be experienced if we suffer from UTI.
1) A strong and persistent urge to urinate.
2) Burning during urination or after urination.
3)Passing frequent and small amount of urine which burns , you might constantly have an unsatisfactory sensation as if the urine has not completely voided or passed.
4)Sometimes there can be blood present in the urine or pain in the abdomen along with burning urination , and these symptoms usually indicate that the infection has travelled up to the urinary bladder (place where urine is stored).
5)If the infection is not treated accordingly then it can also spread and infect the kidneys as well. The symptoms which are most commonly seen in this type of infection are fever , chills and shivering , nausea , vomiting , pain in the upper back and flanks which are commonly called love handles.
My main aim while writing this blog is not actually giving you information regarding this topic , but I would like to focus more on how to prevent it ! Because as we all have learnt since childhood that 'PRECAUTION IS BETTER THAN CURE'
So, how can we exactly avoid having these recurrent episodes of UTI?
1) First and foremost solution is drinking lots of water .Drinking 3-4lit/day is the solution to any problem , then let it be UTI or PMS or any skin related condition. As you drink large amount of water eventually you will pass more urine and all the bacteria's get washed off easily.
2)Many of us have no idea about the precautions which have to be taken after intercourse. It is very necessary to pass urine after having intercourse , drink water and immediately try to pass urine as I said that the bacteria's should be washed off and by doing so you might save yourself from many kinds of infections.
3)Keep your genitals clean and hygienic.
4) Wash from FRONT TO BACK - after urination or after passing stools wash from front that is from the urethra or vagina to the back that is the anal region , as any infection in the anal region can spread to the vagina or urethra.
5)Avoid using feminine irritant products such as any kind of sprays or even powders , as it can irritate the urethra.
